my wii remote does not look like that. there isn't a resistor in between the LED's like in the picture. mine has nothing in the middle.

A slight modification?
A slight variation on the compenents used?

If two components peform essentially the same job, there is no reason to make the new component exclusive to a "new" model of the same device.
