Yes, you will have to mod your Wii. You will have to softmod your Wii with HomeBrew or put a modchip in it. Myself, I suggest modchips over softmodding, because with one Wii system update, it could be gone.
For what I have read, it seems you afraid to harm your Wii, which is common. For you, softmodding would be easiest. I'm typing this from a iPod Touch right now, so I'm sorry I can't post links. But you need to go to the "Wii Homebrew And Hacking" section of the WiiNewz forums, and go to the "Softmodding For Dummies" sticky at the top. It comes with everything you need and a full tutorial on how to install it. The only downside is, if you are on Wii Firmware 3.4, you cannot softmod your Wii to play backups.
If you do decide to take the modchip route, please post your Wiis serial number or scroll to the bottom of the "Modchip" forum and use the stickys to find your Wiis chipset. Based on your Wiis chipset, I, or one of the other members of the forums, can help you decide which chip is right for you.
Also, you said you used a DVD+RW, I would suggest using DVD-R.
Hope his helps.
