Default So I broke my Wii Drive trying to adjust the POT.

Hello,

I was beginning to get random lockups / DRE errors when running both originals and backups (WiiKey, original) on my DMS WIi Drive. I opened it up, pulled out the drive, and tried to adjust the POT.

First, I accidentally turned the screw far to the right (clockwise), which I realize set the POT very, very high (> 1000). Then, it was kind of stuck - I couldn't turn it back :P

I went out and bought a multimeter and some tools to prod the screw, and after some prodding, I was able to set it back to something normal (now set at 600). However, surprise surprise, the drive now does not read discs.

Details:
- This is a DMS drive, not launch day, but launch 'year'.
- POT is set at 600
- When inserting a disc (been testing with an original Wii Sports), the drive will spin up as normal. Occasionally, it will just keep spinning, and then the Wii gives me 'an error has occured'. Normally, it will stop spinning in a few moments.
- No game ever shows up in the Wii Menu
- When trying to launch a game via SoftChip (which I use for imports), the disc spins up, I can visually see the laser moving properly and shining it's red light through the disc. However, I get an error at DI_ReadID, which I believe is the first disc command sent to the drive. No Disc ID is shown.

So, have I busted my drive, my wii, or my laser? And as a corollary, should I order a new laser assembly or a drive?

Is there anything else I can do to try to fix this?

Thanks for your help guys. I'm counting on you.

get the reading off another DMS drive and set yours to it. If the laser is done, then shell out some money to buy a laser and have it replaced by a professional.

But how can I tell if it's the laser assembly I fucked up, or the full drive?

pot tweak it to 600ohms and if it still doesnt work it could be possible the lens is burnt out bu adjusting the pot too high..if this is the case you will need to get a new laser. pm for price.

just for reference, it would only damage, or make any difference at all, if you turned the wii on after you make the POT extremely high? or if you turned it real high, and turned turned it back to normal without powering on, should there be no difference.

as far as I know the damage is only done once you actually send power to the drive.
