Default Playing Imports -> Wii freeze/Black Screen

I have been trying to play some import games on my Wii and have been running into an issue. I am using an NTSC Wii modded with v1 Wasabi. All NTSC backups work fine, but when I try to launch a PAL import All I get is a black screen. I dont even hear music like many people report to have. My wii appears to freeze completely (My wiimotes turn off and wont reconnect, and the only thing i can get the wii to do is eject. Aside from that i must hold the power button down to turn it off then power it back on).
This is happening after trying to patch my iso's with RegionFrii. I suspect that im making some stupid mistake, but haven't been able to figure out what it is. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

have you checked the region free compatibility list to see if the games you are trying work?
