Hello,
first off, i wanna to say that my english isn't the best, but anyway, I hope u'll understand it!
Well, I just wanted to present an idea I had yesterday, the biggest problem is, that I am no developer, that's why I am asking for help here! I would create graphical concepts and mockups on how I imagine the stuff and support the developer(s) with that!
The Idea is to create a kind of Ui Toolkit with different objects, to make the Interfacedesign on the, well, how should I say, a little bit prettier! I mean, the most wii homebrew just doesn't look get (exception: homebrew channel)! The Menus are always using different controls and so on that's sometimes really making me crazy! That's how I got the idea of such a toolkit. This toolkit should contain a few components which are working great with all controllers like GC/WiiMote/CC and so on and of course, these are not normal components, so instead of (f.e.) a normal list which you have to scroll down i would suggest something that displays maybe 6-7 items and then you can swap pages with +/- on the WiiMote and L/R on CC/GC controller! I hope ur getting it :/ This should just be adapted to the great wii controlling and be usable for everyone!
I would make the design of these components, but i can't program and of course, u need a very good programmer for such stuff and who is really motivated and interested and ready to spend some time in such a Project!
I can't show any mockups yet, how it should look like, but I would immediately start creating something if someone really wants to program that and start that project, of course, we would make someting like a google code project to better organize this project.
I think the target is clear, there should be a unity homebrew ui toolkit for the wii, which is accessible for everyone for free and which everyone can use:
1. Programmers should have it easier to make UIs
2. Give the users better UIs
3. Make the homebrew scene a little bit cooler and do something good, I think such a project has a future!
Here are some components for this project I can imagine:
Button, Labels, Lists (only text/text with image), popup menus, small message windows which show hints and so on, checkboxes, maybe radioboxs, tab-lists & toolbars (could be probably very similar), image component
so that's all I can see at the moment which makes use on the wii there are also some things which are useless at the wii I think (like multi-split tables!)
You have to say of course, that these components should not like just like standard PC Components, they should adapt to the wii so it's usable for wii users! As example I mentioned lists, instead of scrolling, you can use other, easier and more usable methods for the wii!
Oh and I also would have a name for that project, I would call it Uniity, which is actually just Unity with 2x "i"! This should show that it's later maybe used for many apps and maybe all the homebrew out there!
I really hope someone want to do this, I think I could get good support by some programmers here cause it's a developer board. I hope someone will do this! Like I said, I will do mockups and show you my ideas, all I need is a good programmer who wants that!
Good idea. It's about time for that too: the Homebrew Channel is out, so we just need homebrew. For homebrew, we need good libraries. This library would be good.
The best way would be a skinnable set of components, shared between all your homebrew. (Kind of like Visual Basic, come to think of it...)
i think you can download a toolkit with comman things like usb support wii mote support @ wiibrew
well, but thats not what i mean, i'm talking about a UI Toolkit, that means that you have ui widgets like buttons which just have to be used by everyone an not programmed hardly by all the programmers, but i still couldn't find anyone who wants to do it!
It's a very useful concept. I'd do it, but:
1) I can't even code Hello World for the Wii.
2) Nobody will download the toolkit if a nobody like me makes it.
What's really needed is for somebody very well known (bushing?) to release an "official" Wii SDK, which comes with all the necessary libraries, including the toolkit. Then all the homebrewers would get the SDK, and would use the included toolkit!
