Good News Wii Fans "Wireless Wii Sensor Bar Preview" Works even better than candles!
According To IGN http://gear.ign.com/articles/750/750908p1.html
December 13, 2006 - We discovered pretty early in our time with the Wii that the console's Sensor Bar that wires into the Wii isn't quite as complex a piece of the operation as we originally thought. No data flows between the sensor bar and the console, and the wire is used for nothing other than drawing power from the Wii. In fact, the sensor bar does nothing other than shine infrared lights at the Wiimote, which calculates its position by triangulating between the IR-emitters on either side of the sensor bar. A candle on either side of a TV does just as good a job communicating with the Wiimote as an official sensor bar, and candles aren't attached to the Wii with an annoyingly short wire.
It was only a matter of time before enterprising accessory manufacturers went to work to offer a self-powered sensor bar, and the first appears to be ready to ship. Wirelesssensorbar.com is offering a 9-volt battery powered model for $24.99 + $5.99 shipping for American customers. The device is said to operate for more than 48-hours on a single battery, and rocks a convenient front mounted power button and indicator light in front.
We haven't done any hands on testing of the product yet, and the company producing it is a small time operation making use of PayPal billing and Gmail email. Considering, however, the simplicity of a device that does nothing but power two infrared-LEDs, we're guessing it's unlikely they're messing anything up.
hey guys sorry if im asking somthing stupid and have no clue what im talking about because i probably dont =) but i know nothing about this
As far as led lights go.....would you be able to use something like this...it just looks small and comfertable and my tv does have a usb plug......thanks.. =)
I'm pretty sure you need 2 sets of 2 lights placed 8 inches apart, and they have to be infrared LED's. Anyone with a bit of electronics know-how would be able to make one powered by USB.
well you would need the infrared leds.. but you also need to have them send the proper wavelengths to the wiimote.. as i dont think it just sends some random frequencies out. i could be wrong though.
i also didnt know candles sent out infrared light =P
BE WARNED-DO NOT ORDER FROM WIRELESSSENSORBAR.COM !!
I paid for a wireless sensor bar by e-cheque on the 12 December. The payment cleared on the 22nd December. I received nothing from the seller, so I sent an email on the 30th December asking for confirmation of the order and a dispatch date. I had no response to this so I sent a further email on the 5th January, again asking for order confirmation and delivery status. I finally received a response on the 10th January, apologising and saying there had been an oversight and saying the sensor bar would be dispatched by the 12th January at the latest. I replied straight away, thanking them for the information. To my surprise I had a further email on the 18th January explaining again why the sensor bar had not shipped previously and asking me to confirm whether or not it had been arrived and they would send one ship one as quickly as possible. This clearly implied they had not dispatched by the 12th Jan as had previously been promised. I replied the same day confirming I had not received the item and asking for dispatch ASAP.
As I received no response to this, I sent another email on the 24th Jan, asking them to confirm the position by return. I have received no response to this either. I sent further emails on the 28th January and the 1st and 9th February asking for delivery of the item or my money back. I have had no response to any of these.
I strongly recommend you do not order from wirelesssensorbar.com as you risk this man taking your money, not delivering the item and ignoring your correspondence, just as happened to me.
I reluctantly accept that my money is lost and wirelesssensorbar.com will not refund me or deliver the advertised product now. However, I understand that a similar product is due to be released in March by a reputable seller, with a longer battery life than advertised by these cowboys anyway, so I will wait until it is available and order from them.
I built my own sensor bar with 4 IR Leds ( 2 on each side) and put it in 2 Altoids can. Works great for using Wiimote on computer or Wii. It took about an hour or so and anyone can build it.
you know what works wonders? and doesnt even require batteries/external power sources?
the stock sensor bar. the thing has like a 20foot cord so theres no reason not to use it. i dont think anyone really keeps their amp that far from the tv. if so, just plug the wii into the tv lol..
wireless sensor bars are nonsense and just a fad
the only valid reason ive seen someone make a wireless sensor bar so far is the dudes who set up their wii in a theatre.
