I'm picking up my 60" HDTV tomorrow and want to hook it up using component cables but I want to use fiber optics for the surround sound. Does the wii not support digital audio output with component cables? Any help or links to products would be appreciated.
I have my Wii hooked up to a 65" HDTV via component cables. The Wii doesn't support optical out (which really sux). Only the old style Red/White analog outputs. Old school Dolby Surround is the best you can hope for (not digital).
Also, keep in mind the max res a Wii can do is only 480p. Games will look a little better, but not "great" like they do on a true HD console (like the ps3/xbox360).
You'll also notice jaggies WAY more than you did before... SSBB almost looks grainy on my new tv due to the Wii's weak resolution output.
Old school Dolby Surround is the best you can hope for (not digital).
Dolby Surround is the precursor of (older than) Pro Logic; the Wii supports the newer Dolby Pro Logic II which is also featured in many PS2 and Gamecube games. A receiver that processes Dolby Pro Logic II is required and produces 5.1 discrete channels of sound. You are correct in that it is not digital.
It was worth buying the component cables. I ended up getting them free....Kinda. I had a $10 coupon from when I purchased my TV from tiger direct. I found them on there for $12 including shipping. I'm very happy with the way it looks compared to the square box you get with regular cables
