Default Question regarding drive laser.

Hello, I have had my wii since release modded with a wiikey. Recently, I have been getting disk cannot be read errors. The blank media is new and not scratched. In order to bypass this error i simply re insert disk and it continues playing into I run into this error again. Am I getting this frequent error because the drive laser needs to be cleaned? If it does, what do i need to clean it with? Tks.

Isopropyl Alcohol 99% is the best to clean laser as it leaves no deposit. Do not use 50% isopropyl or 70%. Only 99% is ok for this task.

Some people use windex or other glass cleaner for it but I don't know if it's good or not.

Also, if your wii is on it socket, try putting it down so you will insert the disk with the label face up.

I had problem since the beginning with my wii (same as yours) and Nintendo CS told me to put wii on it side instead of on it socket and if problem persists, to send it back for repairs. Since then, I never got a disk read error problem.

Problems were with an original and a 2 weeks old wii not modded.

alkirah: to be honest, you should have sent it in, you're not fixing the problem you're just working around it and you'll eventually get DREs again and probably fairly soon (soon as in relative to most other wiis)

@jordymage55: clean the diode as alkirah said (99% isn't available in some states, but whatever the highest you can find will work), if that doesn't work you can try adjusting the POT of the drive or find a new DVD (borrow from a friend if possible) and burn another game to see if it works without a problem

sdub90: it's been more than a year and haven't got a single dre so ... I'll keep my finger crossed.

Or else, I'll just replace the laser.

Has anyone tried sending in a modded Wii to Nintendo for laser-tweaking?

Did they refuse to fix it or did they slap on a new d2c drive, and did they charge anything for it?

i would think you have to take out the mod chip before you send it in.

Yeah, but for an amateur it can be pretty hard to disguise a modchip has been installed, so I was wondering how much they look into the PCB.
