So Frozen are you one though cookie now? Writing software for multi million dollar enterprise servers... wheeew! The fact that this can be done is great. If you don't know how to use knife you will cut yourself. The same goes for Waninkoko's stuff. Use at your own risk. You got to think out of the box. I'm sure custom firmware opens doors to anything. And one more thing... I haven't seen linux actually run on a wii... Hangs when booting.

It wouldn't have to be a complete custom Firmware, just a custom IOS and btw. there is allready USB mass storage support.

IF that happens, then the answer is releasing a SAFE way to update firmware, NOT totally removing the system menu. The REAL answer would be to find a new way to install the HBC, NOT actually screw with the official firmware and downgrade. My understanding is that Bushing and Marcan are already working (or have ready) ways to do this without requiring such a dangerous and invasive procedure. There is no point in releasing them UNTIL Nintendo makes their move. Otherwise Nintendo can be like "oh so that's what they're planning, we'll cut them off ahead of time" ruining all the work they've put in.

What I would like to see is a way to boot the System Menu off an sd card through homebrew, this way we could use any version and not have to worry about bricking since its being run through software on an sd card and does not involve messing around with your real system menu.

Waninkoko has already said that he will not release this unless it is necessary to use it and only then if it were safe.

As Frozen-Solid stated, other methods are already being developed that will be safer.

We don't need custom firmware though. The only reason the Xbox needed it because there wasn't a native way to boot homebrew from the default firmware. We can install original channels and boot homebrew from the system menu by default in the Wii. There's no reason to bother with custom firmware right now. Maybe in a few months if Nintendo seriously locks down the IOS and System Menu to the point that we can't use it, THEN it will be necessary, but as far as I'm concerned if you really want homebrew you just don't have to update.

As for Linux booting, haven't you tried MFE-Wii yet? That boots linux and starts up Mplayer and a gui for Mplayer. WiiMiidia is using gc-linux to run mplayer as well. Apparently you don't know what you're talking about ro4sho because Linux has been running for months.

The latest version (0.4) of linux from gc-linux can even use a usb-keyboard attached to the console (the version with the HBC apps is 0.2, not 0.4. 2 was included by accident instead of 4). Version 0.2 boots, but only works with a USB Gecko, which is why the system hangs if you boot it without a gecko.

He does have other channels after the reboot so maybe it's fake.
And does the HBC go to the health and safety screen after shutting down?
