Wii New Exploit Found In Super Smash Bros. Brawl

Quote:
DON'T NAME THIS EXPLOIT! LEAVE THAT TO COMEX!

Exploit by comex, ELF loading code by Team Twiizers. Bug used was discovered by svpe.

This exploit exploits a vulnerability in SSBB's stage builder code to run arbitrary homebrew code. Currently it will load an elf file from /boot.elf on the SD card.

This exploit differs from others in the fact that it is quite difficult for Nintendo to patch. There is no method on the Wii for patching games, and as this exploit does not go through the System Menu, it can not be patched by Nintendo at this time.

Join us in #sssb on EFNet (irc.efnet.net) to discuss! Release is when its done (aka: soon).

All you have to do to use this exploit is delete all custom stages on your Wii, then copy over the file. When you etner the Stage Builder menu, it will automatically run /boot.elf on SD.

Coincidence?

Nintendo quietly announced this evening that the user generated content feature in Super Smash Bros. Brawl will end on June 30.

As of June 30th, 2009, the current service that accepts user-generated snapshots, stage designs, and replay data will no longer be available. Please note, however, that we will continue to distribute such data after that date.
That’s it. No other indication given, although a little bird told me some of the more devious Smash Bros. players were uploading hacked stages that borked the system. Could be due to that or something else, but Nintendo ain’t saying either way.

I doubt these things are much related to each other. They are only talking about the ability to send stuff to Nintendo. What you're doing on your console can't be stopped by Nintendo.. and seeing the exploit is triggered immediately when opening the menu I do not see the exploit could be sent to Nintendo. And even if.. would they send a borked stage to all WiFi clients then?

Default Hmm

I was under the impression that a person uploaded their custom stage, then anyone could download said stage, if anything this is a precautionary measure. Or completely unrelated, but I doubt that.

Well. I ordered the game. I guess the time was now, before a patched rerelease will be out. It is nice to have hacking resources secured.

The game is excellent. I've tried it... at a friend's place or something.
