Wii BootMii Released

News Source: Official Site

The long awaited release of BootMii is finally upon us. A public beta is now available from the official site linked above.

Due to architectural limitations, BootMii cannot access the WiiMote. Use a GC controller or the Power/Reset buttons.

Quote:
BootMii is a piece of software that can be installed as an IOS or inserted into the boot process. As an IOS, it provides a fast way to back up your Wii's internal NAND flash memory, and will eventually form the basis of a new generation of homebrew applications for the Wii. Inserted into the boot process, BootMii provides you with a "safety net" -- you can back up your entire Wii to SD in under three minutes! If you were to brick your Wii, BootMii would still run and let you restore your backup from SD, quickly and painlessly. BootMii also allows you to directly boot the Homebrew channel or other homebrew from SD, bypassing the "warning screen" and the rest of the menu.

A few notes to remember that are not in the readme:

Quote:
FAQs:
Q: Why won’t my wiimote sync in the BootMii menu?

A: Due to architectural limitations, we can’t access the WiiMote. Use a GC controller or the Power/Reset buttons. See also http://bugs.hackmii.com/index.php?do=details&task_id=21

Q: Why do I have all of these bad blocks in my NAND?

A: The NAND Flash chips used in the Wii come with up to 80 bad blocks from the factory. This is normal.
If you do NOT have a Gamecube Controller you can use the buttons on the front of your Wii as follows:

Power = Next
Reset = Enter

Also if you want to disable BootMii from loading just rename the folder and it will not load. You can set BootMii to autoload the system menu but it adds about a 4-5 secs delay to the boot sequence.

Also if you have Preloader installed they will not conflict with each other.

Boot Sequence = BootMii > Preloader > System Menu

Enjoy!

Default Wiimote sync?

I wonder if they plan on adding Wiimote to this in the future or if they are serious that it can never be implemented due to architectural reasons, or it just hasn't been coded in the BETA. If there is no Wiimote support, I probably won't install this. Call me lazy, but I have gotten used to remote booting/shutting down. I don't want to have to get up and press buttons on the system. I've been around since the NES, but I have grown accustom to it!

Pezjono,

I believe that since it´s still a beta version we can wait for much more to come.
Anyway, you can find a open issue about this in http://bugs.hackmii.com/index.php?do=details&task_id=21

(My personal opinion is that are other things that are more important to be done first

The HBC 1.0.2 does not recognize SDHC cards.

1.0.1 does.

Amazing... Simply amazing. Only flaw I can find is it takes 6+ seconds for it to boot.

Since this is only a beta, I'm sure boot time will get faster.

Can this replace preloader? I'll delete preloader if so.

I guess the intended use for most users is to install it, then rename/move the bootmii folder so that bootmii is installed but not used. Then if there is a problem in the future, it will be much simpler to fix.
