Sorry for not trying this but i have one and only Wii.
The only prob is that Waninkokos downgrade tools, i think, they need wireless connection to download some files. But wii in this service mode....i don't know maybe it doesn't initialize the wireless.
After that a clever guy out there will create a tool to back up our working WiiOS files and generate a autoboot disk that writes those files back to flash. Of course i just say things and things that i don't even know how hard is to make them.

This wii was bricked on the "Opera error" screen while it was trying to load the health warning screen (I think it had some PAL game with old 2.x system menu installed on it and that causes full bricks. One game I know that cause full bricks with cross region updates is RE4)
Holding the buttons wile powering it on resulted on a black screen (typical of system menu 2.x) and then I inserted the SSBM disc and wait for a few minutes. then it reset and shown the first startup screen (country settings)
There's no mistery and no reason to use a modified HBC disc with this method.
And by the way wii is already working... Now I need to find parts to put it together (this will be a guinea pig wii for me playing with hardware hacks.)
