Who seriously cares about the warranty? The wii is almost 2 years old now, and the warranty was 15 months max. millions of wiis are already out of warranty. The wii rarely breaks anyways. Plus, the wii itself is only 250 dollars. that is just 5 game backups. if it breaks you buy a new one. It's one paycheck or less.
but what is important is the data on the broken wii. That is the part that sucks. game saves need to be backed up. Miis need to be backed up and hacked to work on the new console. But what about your wii points, VC/wiiware titles, wii numbers and friend codes? Nothing that can be done about any of that though.
softmods don't kill consoles. How come everyone doesn't have a flashcart for the NDS? Even if you never pirate a game, people would like carrying ALL of there games on one card right? most people just don't know about these things, or don't bother.
what percent of wii owners even read websites like this? most people I have come across still think it's impossible to mod a gamecube.
the normal wii family isn't going to install a chip, but isn't going to pirate games with a softmod either. nintendo is in no danger.

1. mod chips: find a dealer, get the wii to them somehow, pay money, wait... all inconvenient.
2. softmod: get a friend who's done it to his to come do it to yours, or read a guide and do it yourself. no problem.
i agree 100% on the flash cart thing. It is so much more convenient to just select a game and go, rather than plug a cart in. same for wii discs, which is why I have bought lots of VC and wiiware titles but dont have many games. If the NDS had an official flash cart and an online shop, it would be awesome. they don't, and so the niche is filled elsewhere.
you are forgetting that the average person had difficulty with technology. sometimes my mom needs help turning the home theater system on. My dad needed help making menus in word. people are non technical. my parents have never burnt so much as a CD in their life.
Softmods require you to do something tricky with every boot. besides doing it, they need to get the games. That involves dumping, downloading, or something, and burning. the games must be burnt onto high quality media. the pot might need to be adjusted. You need a decent burner too. You have to worry about the program you use, and the speed you record at. You might have to unscrub, trucha sign, etc. You have to worry about nintendo updates and the new patches everytime. You have to be afraid of being banned from the WFC.
most of these problems exist with hard mods too, but people doing hard mods are natually technical. softmods are just for the same people with hard mods who want to use ISO loaders or something and save money on DVDs.
and you know what? even if someone doesn't buy a single game, nintendo makes plenty of money on the hardware. Do you think nunchuks and classic controllers cost 20 bucks to make? I have one wii guitar, 4 wiimote, 4 nunchuks, and two classics. I will get some motionpluses and another wii guitar. Maybe a wiifit someday. i spent money on wiipoints.
how about used games, like seriously. what if someone only buys used games? what if they only buy games on sale? after steep price reductions? after the wii 2 comes out? no one is claiming those are immoral, but they don't help the develipers as much.
The piracy of Xbox didnt kill the console. Why should bootable games from HDD kill Wii?
because even though the xbox was easy to pirate, it had powerful console technology of its time. The wii does not. This already de motivates 3rd parties to make games. Now a softmod comes a long and that completely kills 3rd party interest.
3rd party: "Why the hell would i want to develop a game for a low hardware system thats easily hacked."
can someone competent answer that hypothetical question without including the wiis controls or number of systems sold? didnt think so.

The companies that develop the games don't care at all about how "low hardware" the system is. For them it's all about return on investment.
All other things being equal, a system with lower power actually costs less to develop for. That translates to greater ROI for wii development, *if* the difference in piracy compared to other platforms doesn't offset that gain. I don't know if it does, nor do you. Any supposition one way or the other is just unsupported speculation.
And why isn't the fact that the wii has a huge customer base a valid response to your question of why a developer might publish for a platform that's more easily hacked? A smaller percentage of sold units in a larger market may or may not be more financially lucrative, depending on how the numbers play out.

Definitely makes piracy easier than a modchip install, but it still leaves the problem of downloading, unraring, and burning games. Most people I know aren't capable of performing these simple tasks, let alone dealing with monkey wrenches like bad DVD brands and DL discs.

I was talking about developing Quality titles.. Not the common shovelware you find. I think that if it was a low end system that was easy to hack, it wouldnt be motivating enough and thus, an even greater percentage of the wii library will be bad (ps im not hating on the wii as it is the only system i own). You know what i mean?
If they know they have a large audience, then they might not try hard enough to seperate their title from the others. Im sorry if im not making any sense here.
Bushing, in the name of all hungarian Wii owners, **** your ***!
You, who live in the USA don't even know the conditions here in Hungary. The government is a bunch of corrupt *Idontsaytheirreligions*. A Wii here costs 77000 Hungarian forints with an Argon modchip and 69000 without. If we count the USD/HUF conversion, it costs 37500 HUF. This is about half the price as in our country. Not to mention the wages here are one third of those in the USA. A game for Wii (Super Mario Galaxy) costs 49 bucks in the USA and 15000 HUF in where I live. Converting the USA price to HUF, it is 7500, half the actual price of the game.
So, the only solution in here is to pirate some of our games. I seriously hoped Bushing would be more sympathetic and not to play the oh-how-a-big-hero-I-am for Nintendo. I hate a few people more than traitors and finks belong to this category. Great work, bushing. Before you go crazy again and try to snoop about us for nintendo, please do all hungarian wii owners a favor and jump off from a *really* tall building.
Down with bushing, long live Waninkoko! He at least does something for the scene itself, not against it.
You actually think that if he made it publicly available on the internet, that there wouldn't be someone else sending it to Nintendo?
He's simply taking the only road that might lead to something positive. Sooner or later it will become public anyway, so if you really want to save your hungarian money, sit down and relax a bit.
