MFE-Wii

nuvalo has ported the MFE media player to the Wii!

Quote:
MFE-Wii for Wii, using wii-linux 8/4/2008

Introduction:
--------------

This project is based on the MFE opensource media player for gc-linux. You can find the original sources on its sourceforge page:

http://sourceforge.net/project/showf...kage_id=156977

This version uses the same sources than the original, there are only some changes on the kernel and the filesystem
to adapt it to wii. It uses wii-linux to run on a wii, and the SDL libraries for this system. It will boot using
the ARAM filesystem method.

What you need:
--------------

- A console ready to run homebrew (Twilight hack + SDElfLoader 3.0)
- SDCard
- Gamecube Pad

Installation:
--------------

- Copy the files mfe-wii.elf and the directory "mfe" to the root of yout SDCard.

- Copy the ".avi" files that you want to play on your sdcard

- Put the SDCard on the wii front sdcard reader

- Connect the gamecube pad

- Launch the file "mfe-wii.elf", using your favourite method of loading homebrew.

Instructions:
-------------

Here is the button relation between the gc-pad and the keyboard:

[digital pad]: Navigate through your filesystem, forward and backward
[A]: Launch a file (play)
[b]: Stop

Missing
-------

- DVD
- Wiimote

Thanks to
----------

- The gc-linux team for their effort in porting linux to the wii
- Isobel, for his great MFE player minidistro.

This is the only version of MFE I have gotten to work so far on my wii (D2C 1A Argon 1.8). The gamecube versions, always gave me errors about the fs (mfe-fs.bz2). So finally I have been able to use MFE! But the downside is, that is did not work with many of the avi files I tested, but did work with some. The ones that did not work, just gave me a black screen. I look forward to watching the progress of this version of mfe.

Looks good, is the Wii hardware fast enough to play back HD video dumps?

the wii only supports 480p resolution so it can't play HD video. you know that. If you have HD dumps, then you must have a HDTV. In that case, you have DVI or HDMI inputs. you can hook your laptop up to the TV and watch them in HD. I can't get my laptop on my tv, because its linux and the svideo isn't easily supported and it doesn't have dvi out either.

does this support reading of avi's off of the front sd, or do you need the gecko?

Opps. Good point about the 480p limiting factor.

Wait a second. Am I missing something? The XBMC took the Xbox's native 480p and was able to upconvert video to 720p/1080i. It also can play native HD x264 video but very, very, very poorly. If a proper homebrew would be developed on the Wii, then why can't it do it as well.
