*disclaimer*

This is just my own broken English opinion of the Flash card. I don't own an E-shop. I'm not some ebay drop shipper/car boot scally. I'm not a mod on any flash card support site with an agenda to push sales. I'm just an average bloke, trying crazy stuff from Hong Kong, in the hope that it (A) arrives and (B) works.

Introduction.

Now if you are thinking. "Why do I need a dedicated multimedia device for my DS?"..Then this product isn't for you. If you are also thinking "I can already watch films using Moonshell!" Then this product isn't for you. But..If you are tired of re-encoding your media to watch on the DS.. and.. are not really impressed with the DPG format in general..poor framerate..poor encoding results..and the whole timesink involved...then I may just have a device, that will interest you. The iPlayer.

The iPlayer is a multimedia flash card. It has onboard hardware which decodes popular video formats such as DIVX,XVID,SVCD,VCD,WMV on the fly. So there's no need to re-encode your movies. Simply copy them to your memory card and away you go. It also has music[MP3,WMA,RA,FLAC,APE] and homebrew support.

What's Inside the Box.

The iPlayer comes in a simple yet stylish white matte finish retail box. The back of the box describes the feature set of the card and the video/audio formats supported by the device. The packaging size, shape and overall finish are very much akin to the Supercard DSONEi.

The contents of the package are contained in a black plastic tray. These are as follows:- The iPlayer card, which is housed in a protective clear plastic case and a generic black USB 2.o reader. The package also contains a Mini CD which has the OS software, a glossy paper manual and finally, a two sided A4 sized promotional poster.

Its good to see some physical documentation and a software CD. Most of the cards I have been reviewing recently, ship with just the hardware. Overall the packaging and contents are of a good standard. Glossy literature, good protection for the hardware and a clean professional design.

Build quality.

The iPLayer comes in a white shell. The grade of plastic is very sturdy. The two parts of the shell are glued together. There is also a mini screw on the back of the card near the copper teeth. There are two noticeable IC bulges on the label side of the card. The label itself is a glossy black with a Silver iPlayer logo. The label had been placed squarely on the card.

The card's "copper teeth" are protected by raised fins but the design and placement of them, is unique. The PCB is green. The microSD slot is situated on the top of card. The spring has a positive action and click. The populated card slot is flush with the top of the shell. Inserting the card into my DSi was no trouble. The IC bulges didn't cause any problems by scraping the sides of my well worn slot 1.

I was extremely happy with the construction of the card. It's definitely up there with the best I have tested. On a par with the R6 and Supercard DSONEi. The device has a reassuring weight about it. Probably due to the amount of kit hidden inside the shell.

Installation.

The process was simplicity itself, thanks to the bundled software CD and manual. No need to trawl round the internet, searching for software. I followed the instructions given by the paper manual and copied the OS from the mini CD to the root of my microSD memory card. I then created the requested Video and Music folders. I found some suitable media files and copied them to the appropriate directories.

GUI.

When you fire up the iPlayer you are greeted with a menu with 5 options. Video,Music,Homebrew, Files and System. You can navigate the menu with either the stylus or D-PAD + A button. You can tap on the help text displayed in the top right of the screen. This brings up an overview of all the button functions.

DPAD UP/Down/PgUp/PgDown
A button: OK / open file
B button: Cancel / Close file
X button: increase volume
Y button: decrease volume
L button: previous music [sleep mode]
R button: next music, brightness adjustment. [sleep mode]
SELECT button: close the bottom screen when movie playing.

Not displayed is the homebrew soft-rest button combo, which is L+R+A+B+X+Y.

Video Mode.

The top screen of the video menu displays all the compatible files in the VIDEO folder. This only shows the files in the root of the Video folder, files in nested folders within the Video folder do not appear. There is no alpha-numeric sorting of the files. Files are displayed as a numbered list. Only the file name is shown and no accompanying meta data or tags. Files names beyond 20-odd characters are not scrolled in order to read them properly.

The bottom screen displays the video transport GUI. This displays all the usual functions, volume, time line and video controls, play/stop/rwd/fwd/next/previous track. There is also an icon which displays a screen settings menu. You can choice from original size, default mode and full screen. You cannot change the screen mode on the fly. Once changed, you have to restart the movie.

In order to test the device to the limit, I picked out a few movies with differing combinations of codecs. DIVX with Mp3,XVID with OGG etc. I even tried formats that might not be supported just for the hell of it. None of the movies were clips but full 700 meg rips. This would also test the device for audio/video sync when seeking various scenes using the time line.
