There is no way a wii can play a mkv file even if someone made a player. The horsepower needed to decode mkvs is pretty high and the weak processing power on the wii wont be able to handle it. also at 480p max output, would there be a point?

My point was not if the wii can play mkv files but that the system doesn't habe the horsepower to play them properly. Until the player in question can play the files properly you have not proven me wrong.

Normal .mkv files play fine , it still has some issues with 480p(some frame drops but you can disable it) and 720p tho If you do not believe me , try it , and judge yourself

MKV is just a container, you can put pretty much any video inside it, either high def, or something very low definition, also depends on the codec used on the video what will wii play.
