nice writeup! Looks alot easier then I thought.. I can't wait to get my modchip now..
is there any way to tell if a .iso is ntsc, pal or whatever so I don't end up bricking my wii? I have noticed that alot of times when stuff is downloaded, its improperly labeled and I would hate to destroy my wii because of someone elses screw up..

As long as you update through the internet, or a new same region game (that has/requires the update// rent it or something.) as your wii, then you wont have a problem.

Wii update manager or wiu are some programs you can use to see what region is the game(and the option to patch the region) and if it has an update(and the option to patch the update).
Personally I try to avoid patching and just check if the iso I downloaded is the right one.
