Maybe we're barking up the wrong tree with regards to the GC2-D2C chip being different - are the board revisions the same? Maybe it's a firmware change rather than a hardware change.

Do we know where the wii assembly lines are? Maybe it's a combination of country of origin and serial number that will reveal the pattern.

Has anyone put an unmoddable drive in a working wii and seen what happens?

I just did 8 LU56's all worked :-/
the guy that was going to send me his drive for testing ended up returning it to the store and got a new one modded elsewhere so I still cant find one to test out. I have a few places that will be able to help a lot.

The unmoddable one mentioned at maxconsole has LU3420 and I am yet to see if it is a false alarm or not. I personally have a LU3395 shipped from Amazon.com on 04/14 and I am waiting for my screw drivers to arrive before I could check if it is moddable with d2pro. I will report my findings on my particular one -- but I won't be sure that if it won't work just because of bad d2pro chip / soldering / wiring, or because of unmoddable d2c chip, as I don't have anything else to try and I am in the middle of nowhere to find a modder.

Sure thing. I have some electronics background and I am confident with my soldering skills. I also have a professional craftsman multi-meter for needed diagnostics. The only fear is that I might void the warranty if I solder on the wii board so I will proceed cautiously with the clip route. Will keep you guys updated.

More testing done - d2pro9 does not work on it either. I got a few Wii's tonight, in the 314, 56 and 57 range - one of the 56 ones could not be modded, but the 57 was fine - looks to be random, and will not work with any chip unfortunately I have tried every one.
