Also, it makes like no sense if you think about it from a modders perspective.
I install a d2pro9 without knowing its whether a d2c or d2c2. Then it turns out its the d2c2, so now i have to desolder the old d2pro9 and install the new one.
Even though the new d2pro9 might be compatible with all models, what are we going to do with all of the old d2pro9s?
sure it works fine with the old models, but there is still no real way to tell is it a d2c2 or not.
if the new firmware was released, all that needs to be done upon discovery of a d2c2 was to re-flash the chip after soldering.
back on page 39 someone posted a post to a site with a picture difference of the d2c and d2c2 drives. the site doesnt have the pic displayed, but i have it here myself
this is showing the top of the drive, apparently its a dead giveaway that by the extra peice up there, its a d2c2, then on the chipset it self, it only says GC2-D2C, and they dont have the second line of info. i read them saying its not 100% positive that all new d2c2 drives are this way.
I just purchased two Wii's in the Netherlands, both with LEF1011**** serials and both have the extra clip on top of the spindle (see previous post).
Both drives have a G2C-D2C marking on the chip, without a second line with numbers. On both drives a D2CKey did NOT work (soldered with Flex PCB).
The console will not recognise any backups (the Red LED will not lit up when you insert a backup). The Blue LED will blink when reading an original. No weird eject or reset behaviour.
I have modded many other G2C-D2C chips without the second line printed on the chip and they all worked fine wih D2CKeys. None of those drives had the extra clip on top of the spindle.
For D2Pro there's a new 1.1beta firmware for the SPI-flash (9 wire) version chips. In the readme it's stated it resolves some bugs and enables the DVD update function and does NOT support the new D2C2 chipset. This means they were aware of the new D2C2 chipset at the time of release of the 1.1b firmware. I have no doubt that a new firmware update will be released for the older 9-wire D2Pro's.

As a modder myself it is not a big deal. The old d2pro9's work flawlessly with older Wii's and d2c with letters below. Most modders do enough volume that they will easily use all their "old" stock without problems, and soon be on all new stock. It is really only an issue for individuals who buy only 1 chip for their Wii and it is unmoddable, so they will need to wait for a firmware update.

ok I'm confused on the 2 pics, where is that extra piece that you are referring to? the 2 pics looks the same to me, my brother purchased a Wii with serial # LU5541xxxxx with the D2C drive chip, so I don't know if it is the D2C2 one, what modchips can be used for it? the D2C? the D2C2? or does he have to wait a while? thanks
k, just spent the last 2 hours trying to mod a console.. tried the Argon 9 wire install, then simply suspected that I must swap to 17 wire... After 2 full attempts and then swapping the chip out I thought it be best to check the top of the drive.
Turns out it's a D2C2... It was purchased from Argos in Southside Shopping Centre in Wandsworth (I think). It has the serial LEH1870XXXX
I knew the day would come but was hoping it would be later rather then sooner.
Oh well, must now sort some D2Pro to fill demand. I'm quite peeved that the D2Pro team have stumped to initially stating that it's a hardware issue and not firmware but now they have openly and 'honestly' stated that they just want the cash..
